Read this in an interview. Been reading Please Kill Me again for the fourth time..

Legs McNiel: "It takes really damaged people to make good rock and roll, the best rock musicians are the most fucked up, look at Kurt Cobain. But when rock and roll became a viable career, all these square guys got into it. Like Rolling Stone never has rock stars on the cover any more, they've got actors, because all the rock stars are boring. Everybody now is playing for all the other 13-year-old kids, it's about hair and fashion, but it's always been like that. What really appealed to me about punk was that the lyrics were so good, like it could have been literature."

I believe that can separate the wheat from the chaff when it comes to punk. Punk bands often have downright stupid lyrics... but stupid in a Witty way. Ramones lyrics are so simple, but so poignant. Same with Screeching Weasel.
It's usually pretty easy to tell the fake from the real. Even if lyrics are convoluted and 'deep' there's a big difference between someone who means it and someone who doesn't.

Not to say I'm fucked up. I'm probably one of the squares
